How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity & AI Overviews

Getting cited by AI search comes down to four things: let the AI crawlers in, structure your content so single passages answer whole questions, publish something original enough to be worth quoting, and make your business a recognizable entity. AI answers now front more than 40% of Google searches via AI Overviews, and ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude each run their own retrieval — with surprisingly little overlap in who they cite.

I build Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) into every site I ship — schema, llms.txt, answer-first structure — including this one. This guide is the practical version: how the AI platforms actually choose sources in 2026, and what to change on your site this week.

How AI search actually picks its sources

When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a question, the model doesn’t answer from memory alone — it retrieves live web pages, reads the best candidates, and composes an answer with citations. Each platform retrieves differently, which is why a brand can dominate one surface and be invisible on another:

PlatformWhere it looksWhat it tends to cite
Google AI OverviewsGoogle’s own index and ranking systemsPages already ranking well; appears on 40%+ of queries
ChatGPT SearchIts own crawl (OAI-SearchBot) plus the Bing indexIndividual experts and creators more than brand pages
PerplexityIts own index (PerplexityBot)Company and organization pages most often
ClaudeLive web search at answer timeClear, documentation-style reference content

The overlap between platforms is tiny — a large 2026 citation analysis found only about 11% of domains get cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. Treat each surface as its own channel.

Step 1: Make sure AI can read your site at all

Before any content strategy, check the plumbing. Three things block more sites than anything else:

  • robots.txt: the AI crawlers — GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended — must not be disallowed. Many security plugins and “block bad bots” rules blanket-ban them without telling you.
  • Rendered content: if your text only appears after JavaScript runs, several AI crawlers never see it. Server-rendered HTML (which WordPress produces naturally) is a real advantage here.
  • Bing indexing: ChatGPT leans on the Bing index — if you’ve only ever verified Google Search Console, add Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap there too.

An emerging extra: an llms.txt file — a plain-text manifest at your site root that summarizes what your site is and where the important pages live, written for AI systems. It’s young as a standard, but it costs nothing; this site ships one automatically.

Step 2: Structure content so it’s quotable

AI answers are assembled from passages, not pages. A passage gets cited when it answers a question completely on its own:

  • Answer first. Put the direct answer in the opening sentences of the page and of each section — then elaborate. Models lift the summary, not the build-up.
  • Question headings. H2s phrased the way people actually ask (“How much does X cost?”, “Is X better than Y?”) map cleanly onto real prompts.
  • Standalone facts. Write claims with a subject and a date: “In 2026, INP replaced FID as a Core Web Vital” survives being quoted; “it replaced the old one recently” doesn’t.
  • Lists, tables, and FAQ schema. Structured formats are the easiest for retrieval systems to parse — and FAQPage JSON-LD (which this site emits from its FAQ blocks) doubles as a featured-snippet play.

Step 3: Publish something worth citing

Structure gets you parsed; substance gets you picked. The 2026 citation studies are consistent about what wins:

  • Original, first-person data is the highest-leverage content type across every platform — your own numbers, tests, case results. Nobody else can publish your data.
  • Comparisons and structured lists earn roughly twice the citation rate of opinion essays (about 25% vs 11% in recent analyses).
  • Genuine experience — “I migrated 40 stores and here’s what broke” — is exactly the E-E-A-T signal that generic AI-written content can’t fake.

Step 4: Make your business a recognizable entity

AI systems cite sources they can identify and trust. That recognition is built off-page as much as on-page: consistent Person/Organization schema markup, the same name and description across your site and profiles, real reviews, and mentions on pages the models already read. On-page, WordPress makes the schema part straightforward — my on-page SEO service covers exactly this stack, and Google documents how its AI surfaces use structured content in its official AI features guidance.

What is an AI citation actually worth?

Honest answer: it’s a credibility engine more than a click engine. A citation in an AI answer works like a footnote — many readers accept the answer without clicking through. But the compounding effects are real: your brand appears at the exact moment someone researches your category, AI referral visitors convert unusually well when they do click, and citations beget citations. Track it by watching referrers like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in your analytics — and remember the fundamentals still gate everything: a slow site gets crawled less and cited less (my Core Web Vitals guide covers that side).

Frequently Asked Questions

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for Disallow rules under user agents like GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, or a blanket Disallow: /. Also check your security plugin’s bot-blocking list and your CDN’s bot-fight settings — Cloudflare and several WordPress firewalls block AI crawlers by default now.

It’s a legitimate business choice, but know the trade: blocking training crawlers (like Google-Extended) keeps your content out of model training, while blocking search crawlers (GPTBot, PerplexityBot) removes you from AI answers your competitors will then occupy. For most service businesses, visibility is worth far more than the content is worth protecting.

No. AI Overviews draw heavily from well-ranking pages, but the overview often cites pages ranking further down when a specific passage answers the question more directly. Strong rankings raise your odds; quotable, answer-first passages are what actually get selected.

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a plain-text file at your site root that tells AI systems what your site is about and which pages matter most. Adoption is still early, so treat it as a cheap bonus rather than a requirement — it takes minutes to add and can only help discovery.

Faster than classic SEO in one way: Perplexity and ChatGPT Search retrieve live, so a genuinely better answer page can get cited within days of being indexed. Google AI Overviews is slower because it leans on established rankings. Plan for weeks to see the first citations and a quarter to judge the strategy.

AI search rewards the same things good clients do: clear answers, real experience, and a site that works technically.
